Editorials

Opening Moment: Zoe

Inspiration for Valentine's/Love feature:
  1. Women want Botox for Valentine's Day
  2. Peruvian florists see jump in sales
Pulitzer Prize Winning Editorials:
Step 1:  Opening Activity: What is a Pulitzer Prize? With your group, read the link, and come up with a 1-2 sentence working definition.

Step 2: In your groups discuss the following questions.  You should record your answers on your individual blog.
  1. Who was the writer/writers and for which publication?
  2. What was the PURPOSE of their editorials? (See "citation" tab)
  3. After reading a few of the articles, describe what types of resources they used and approximately how many in any given editorial.
  4. Did you detect any bias? Explain.  Cite specific passages.
  5. How does the format, tone, and length of an editorial differ from a feature article?
Step 3: In your new group (as assigned by teacher), report out on your findings (questions 1-5) to your new group members.  Each group member should take notes on the "expert" for the given editorial.  Record answers to the questions on your blog.

Notes from listening to conversations:

  • A lot of direct quotes--others had none
  • Used research as the sources
  • A clear purpose
  • Varying degrees of bias
    • Bias because of word choice
  • Shorter, more to the point than a feature
  • More user friendly than a feature--tries hard to layout the "facts" clearly.
  • Does omitted information lead to bias?
  • Longer paragraphs

Valentine's Day Articles

1. Brainstorm Valentine's Day/Love Articles

2. NYT: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/01/opinion/sunday/on-dying-after-your-time.html

Read the above article and then respond to at least two of the below questions on your blog:

  • Should scientists try to help people beat old age so we can live radically longer lives? Why?
  • How long would you want to live, if you could choose your life span?
  • Do you agree with the author that “adding years to a life doesn’t necessarily make it any fuller?”
  • What would be the benefits of a scientific breakthrough that allowed people to live radically longer lives?
  • Do you think the benefits outweigh the potential negative consequences, such as higher health care costs for society and fewer jobs for young people? Explain.

Welcome to Journalism #2! Get ready to write!

Get ready to LIP DUB!  Check out some of the best:

Backwards lip dub: Shorewood High School (California)

Look at two feature articles written last time:
  • Inside Look at Yearbook (before and after editing)
  • Deck the Halls (before editing...discuss with partner what you might do to improve)
    • Both were given as handouts; if you need another copy see Ms. P

Activity---> You don't know WHAT the activity is yet; but these are the ground rules:

Rules:

1. Ask as many questions as you can.

2. Do not stop to discuss, judge, or answer any question.

3. Write down every question exactly as it is stated. (Don’t worry about spelling)

4. Change any statement into a question.

After reading the rules...here are the potential challenges we might face (blue on right side of board):

No homework: next time we will continue this same activity. Get ready to brainstorm with the same partners you had in class today.

Looking closely at feature articles

  • Instagram Conversation...Do You Have Instagram Envy?
    •  Read the article "The Agonies of Instagram" and answer 2-3 of the following questions on your blog.
    •  Respond to 2 other blog posts...and ONE from Ms. Leavitt's class!
        • Do you use Instagram? If so, to what degree do you identify with the ideas described in the article?
        • Do you think people put too much, too little or just enough energy into the way they depict their lives through photos on social media? Explain.
        • Do you ever look forward to events because you know you will post photos afterward?
        • Is there anything wrong with that?
        • The article quotes David Coggins, who says he doesn’t think people should post “trophies,” or photos of expensive things or places few people get to visit. What is your take on this suggestion?
  • Feature Article Elements Breakdown
    • Partner or alone
    • Were you surprised by your findings?
  • Solidifying your article ideas for NEXT class
  • Look at how this will affect your grade...it's the only major assignment this quarter.
    • 94...0 on assignment...new average 47
    • 94...50 on assignment...new average 72
